In 1973, the rock group The Eagles recorded the hit song, Desperado. One of the memorable lines from the song is, "Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?" While they weren't talking about biking in colder weather, it certainly applies.

In the last article, we looked at keeping your head and body warm while riding in colder weather. Today, we will take a look at keeping your hands and feet nice and toasty for bike commuting in the fall, specifically when the temperature is 35-55 degrees Farenheit.

It's late October and the weather is getting colder. In many ways, this is my favorite time of the year to bike to work. The cooler temperatures are more pleasant for commuting, the lakefront bike path is less crowded, and the views on the ride are beautiful. Bike Share Conference Chicago
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Shared .Use Mobility Conference in Chicago. Dubbed Move Together, over 400 attendees from 31 states and 6 countries participated, including private companies, non-profits, government agencies and interested individuals. The conference opened with SUMC CEO, Sharon Feigon outlining a vision of getting to work, or wherever you need to go, without owning a car. She also laid out a challenge of eliminating ownership of 1,000,000 private cars with 5 years through shared mobility.

Dozens of speakers shared updates on the growth and diversity of ride-share, bike-share, and car-share programs across the U.S. Many innovative product ideas were presented including integrated bike locks,
recyclable bicycle helmets, bike dashboards that tell you which way to turn, and all sorts of ride-sharing apps.

Imagine that you want to use the Divvy bike share but don't have a helmet. Do you take a chance and ride without a helmet, hoping you don't fall or have an accident? With the Kranium bike share helmet that will no longer be an issue. This enterprising company has come up with a way to offer low-cost ($5-$8) helmets on-location via a vending machine.

I spoke with Kranium CEO, Robert Miller at the Shared Use Mobility Conference in Chicago. He shared how his company is bringing this lighter, safer, low-cost helmet to market.
